Although this cocktail, traditionally served in a silver cup, has been associated with the Kentucky Derby for just about a century, it is actually a refreshing, sophisticated cocktail that’s good any time. Whether you missed out on Derby Day or you’re still nursing your betting wounds, you can still celebrate National Mint Julep Day on May 30 — all you need is bourbon, sugar, mint, and ice! So dust off your muddler and let’s make juleps!
NATIONAL MINT JULEP DAY TIMELINE.
1700s – Just What the Doctor Ordered.
Mint juleps are used to treat upset stomachs.
1803 – First Mention.
The drink is printed for the first time when U.S. Senator Henry Clay drinks it at the Round Robin Bar in Washington, D.C.
19th Century – Variation.
Gin-based julep becomes popular among Americans.
May 2008 – That’s a lot of Mint Julep.
Churchill Downs displays the world’s largest mint julep glass, standing at six feet.
Ingredients:
- 4 to 5 mint sprigs, leaves only
- 2 sugar cubes, or 1/2 ounce simple syrup
- 2 1/2 ounces bourbon whiskey
- Mint sprig, for garnish
Preparation:
In a highball glass gently muddle the mint, sugar and water.
Fill the glass with cracked ice,
Add Bourbon and stir well until the glass is well frosted.
Garnish with a mint sprig.
